SaaS enthusiasts take pride in the fact that Indian startups are making a wave globally, right now. In just first 9 months of 2021, startups have raised over $23 billion and $12.6 billion, or 55% of that was raised in Q3. Venture capitalists and angel investors are essential to any startup looking for significant funding in India. Here are some of the top venture capital firms investing in India, to keep an eye out for.

Accel Partners

No shock that the California-based Accel Partners are the first one on this list. They’re one of the oldest VC firms in India and have over 1500 startups worldwide. Accel boasts 30 years of experience in the field of startups. They had funded over $450 million in 2016 when they invested in Flipkart. Some notable companies which are backed by Accel are Myntra, Ola, Swiggy, Myntra, and BookMyShow. Accel’s main field of focus is mobile software, internet, and customer services. Their average investments range from $500,000 to $50 million.

Sequoia Capital

Established in 1972, Sequoia Capital has invested in over 1000 companies including but not limited to Apple, Google, GitHub, PayPal, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Youtube. They have funded companies that control over $3.3 trillion in the stock market. Some of their notable investments in India include JustDial, Zomato, Groupon, BYJU’S, OYO, and Practo. Sequoia shortlists about 20 startups bi-yearly and provides investments of $1 to $2 million. 

Kalaari Capital Partners

A venture firm founded in namma Bengaluru has closed over 92 deals since its inception in 2006. Kalaari capital handles $650 million in assets. They have a team of competent advisors in Bengaluru that mainly invests in early-stage startups. In 2015 they had funded $290 million, which was a record at that time. Some of their notable investments include Myntra, Snapdeal, Milkbasket, and cure.fit.

Tiger Global Management

With over 442 investments worldwide and over 97 in India alone, Tiger Global Management invests in both public and private firms. Its latest and notable investment was in Razorpay when it collaborated with other investors and invested a total of $100 million. Other notable firms that were funded by TGM are Urban Company, Flipkart, OPEN, and Ninjcart. In just the first half of 2019, they had invested over $300 million across 13 Indian companies.

Nexus Venture Partners

Nexus primarily invests in small startups in their early stages which show innovation and promise. Their main areas of focus are data security, mobile infrastructure, bioanalysis, consumer and business startups. Their investment can range from $500,500 to $10 million. Some notable firms backed by Nexus are Craftsvilla, Snapdeal, Goodera, Shopclues, unacademy, and Rapido. Nexus has reported over $1.4 billion in assets. They mainly seek out early and seed-stage startups.

Blume Ventures

Blume Ventures was founded in 2010 and is currently headquartered in Mumbai. They primarily focus on tech companies and focus mainly on early and seed-stage companies. They became the first-ever firm to be an institutionalized early-stage investor when they launched a micro-VC fund in 2011. They have invested in companies such as Dunzo, Procol, HealthAssure, MilkBasket, and Cashify. They boast $225 million total capital under management.

Elevation Capital

ELEVATION CAPITAL(previously SAIF PARTNERS) was founded in Hong Kong and is headquartered in Gurugram. Their main portfolio includes Just Dial, MakeMyTrip, Paytm, Swiggy, FirstCry. They are reported to have about $4 billion in capital. They have gone double on their investments in India since 202 and aim to tap into areas such as edutech, healthtech, and SaaS.

Matrix Partners

Matrix Partners is a US-based equity firm founded in 1977 that mainly focuses on venture investments in early and seed-stage companies. They have invested in over 550 companies worldwide. Some notable investments are Quikr, Practo, Ridlr, Limeroad, Chumbak, and Ola. Matrix has a Founders First police, in which they help the founds with not only investment but also with hiring, and strategic decisions.

Chiratae Ventures

Chiratae Ventures(previously IDG Ventures) is a company with over 15 years of experience in funding startups, with a portfolio of over 200 companies in the mobile, engineering, media, and Health-tech companies such as FirstCry, Yatra, Lenskart, Myntra, and Zivame. Their investments range between $1 million to $10 million.
